The incident happened past midnight on Saturday, and two persons were taken into custody on suspicion a day later, officials said.

QUETTA: A collision between a truck and a passenger bus on Tuesday claimed eight lives on the National Highway near Mach Tehsil, DawnNews reported.

Two women were among the dead.

According to initial reports the accident occurred when brake failure caused the driver of the Sukkhur-bound-bus to lose control of the vehicle after departing from Quetta.

NITED NATIONS: Syrian tanks attacked a convoy carrying the head of the UN observer mission, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday. He again told the government to halt its violent crackdown on those fighting to overthrow President Bashar Assad’s regime.

“Yesterday, the convoy of Lt Gen Babacar Gaye was attacked by armed tanks. Fortunately, there were no injuries,” Ban told reporters.

Georgian soldier injured in Afghanistan dies: ministry

Tbilisi: A Georgian soldier injured in January while serving with Nato-led forces in Afghanistan has died in a military hospital back home, the defence ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The death of corporal Givi Pantsulaia brings to 17 the number of Georgian troops killed in Afghanistan.

He was injured by a mortar shell explosion and transferred to a military hospital in the eastern Georgian city of Gori after treatment in a US military hospital in Germany.

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: In what is being called as the biggest ever power failure in India, half of of the country was without electricity supply on Tuesday afternoon. This affected hundreds of trains and lakhs of households and establishments as the grid that connects generating stations with customers collapsed for the second time in two days, highlighting the precarious state of the power sector in the country.

However, confirming the collapse of northern and eastern grids, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told television channels that power for all essential services like railways and metro will be restored in an hour.

At least 35 passengers were killed and 25 injured when a coach of the Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express caught fire near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh early Monday, officials said.

The fire broke out around 5.30 a.m. in the S-11 compartment, minutes after the Chennai-bound train left Nellore railway station in south coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 450 km from Hyderabad.

Eight states have been affected since late Sunday night due to major power supply failure in the Northern Power Grid.

The affected states include Delhi and Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. There will be no Metro train services till power supply is restored.

The northern grid collapsed at 2.30 am. According to reports, it might take four to five hours for the whole system to come back to normal.

UML leader Nepal rules out election on Nov 22

Slain Kashmir youth was militant, reiterates army

SRINAGAR: The young man killed in a Kashmir village two days ago was a militant from whom a weapon was recovered, a senior army officer said Thursday while his family maintained that he was innocent and shot dead while coming out of a mosque.

Referring to the killing of 19-year-old Hilal Ahmad Dar of Bandipora district's Aloosa village Tuesday evening, Lt. Gen. Om Prakash, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Srinagar-based 15th Corps, said: "The Indian Army is a highly disciplined force. In order to avoid civilian damage, for the last many years our operations are based on intelligence inputs."

MANSA: At least two persons lost their lives while three sustained injuries in alleged police firing in Aklia village of Mansa district on Tuesday evening. The villagers were protesting against the police demand for custody of a thief caught by the villagers. As the situation turned ugly and unruly, the police resorted to firing, leading to the casualties.

New Delhi: A day after he abandoned his threat to quit the government, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is finally back at work. Mr Pawar and his deputy and cabinet colleague Praful Patel had been missing office since Friday last after relations between their party, the NCP, and the Congress reached breaking point. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has said that he should be hanged if he is found guilty of complicity in the communal riots in his state in 2002.

Five shops were also destroyed in the blast.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will resume hearing in various identical petitions challenging Contempt of Court Act again today (Wednesday).

On Tuesday, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed that the new Contempt of Court Act 2012 seemed to be against the delivery of justice while the earlier law was intended to ensure the implementation of court orders.

Islamabad:External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will undertake a three-day visit to Pakistan from September 7 to review the second round of the bilateral dialogue process with his counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar.

Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal met Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani yesterday and informed him about the dates for Krishna's visit, diplomatic sources told PTI.

Guwahati: Shoot-at-sight orders have been issued in Kokrajhar district of Assam following fresh incidents of arson and violence. On Monday, the Army conducted flag march and an indefinite curfew was also imposed even as the toll in the ethnic violence in interior areas of the district rose to 21.

Four more bodies were recovered from the district yesterday, said police officials.

SC reduces govt quota for Haj pilgrims

NEW DELHI, : The Supreme Court today reduced the government's discretionary quota seats for Haj pilgrims to 300 from the 5,050 seats, proposed by it.

A Bench of Mr Justice Aftab Alam and Mrs Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai limited the number of seats to be allocated under the discretionary quota by the President to 100, Vice-President to 75, Prime Minister to 75 and the external affairs minister to 50.

The Bench said 200 seats would be reserved for the Haj Committee of India (HCI).

Seven CRPF personnel were today injured during a fierce gun battle with the Maoists at Bokop village in Khunti district, over 50 km from Ranchi, police said.

“Among the seven CRPF jawans injured, the condition of four of them is serious. They are in the ICU of Apollo hospital in Ranchi,” Khunti Superintendent of Police M Tamilvananan told PTI.

Iraqi police say gunmen have killed 13 soldiers on an army base in the country’s northeast, bringing the nationwide death toll to 82 in the single bloodiest day so far this year.

Two senior police officials said the gunmen arrived at dawn on Monday at the military base in the town of Udaim in three vehicles and began shooting at soldiers. No others were wounded.

The attack was one in a wave of violence across the country that left 82 dead.

Kanpur: Freedom fighter Captain Lakshmi Sahgal has died in a Kanpur hospital; she was 97.

She was in a coma since Wednesday when she had a heart stroke. She was a close aide of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

She was born in Madras and qualified as a doctor from the Madras Medical College in 1938. Two years later, she moved to Singapore and set up a free clinic to help migrant Indian workers. She met Subhash Chandra Bose in Singapore in 1943. He spoke of the need to create an all- women's regiment in the Indian National Army in the fight for India's independence, and made her its commander.

Mumbai: Pranab Mukherjee is yet to take oath as President, but expectations are rolling in already. The Shiv Sena, which offered unsolicited support to Mr Mukherjee's candidacy, has urged him to reject the mercy petition of Afzal Guru, sentenced to death for the terror attack on Parliament in December 2001. Twelve people were killed in the attack.

Kabul: Taliban militants executed five civilians near Kabul for working with Nato troops, authorities said on Sunday, the latest in a series of militant activities in villages around the capital.

The news of the incident in Wardak province’s Jalrez district, 40km south of Kabul, came a day after the insurgents publicly lashed two Afghan men and just weeks after the public execution of a woman for adultery.

Syrian forces execute 20 unarmed men: activists

AMMAN: Syrian troops executed at least 20 unarmed men in the Damascus neighbourhood of Mezzeh on Sunday who they suspected of aiding rebels in the area, opposition activists in the district said.

The bodies of 20 men, aged approximately 20 to 30, were collected from the neighbourhoods of al-Ikhlas, al-Zayat, al Farouk, Hawakir al-Sabbarah and al-Basatin, several activists said by phone from Mezzeh.

“The bodies were taken to al-Mustafa Mosque. Most had bullet holes, one with as many as 18. Three had their hands tied behind their back. Some of the men were in their pajamas. Several had their legs broken or fingers missing. Others were stabbed with knifes,” said Bashir al-Kheir, one of the activists.

Islamabad: Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim took oath as the new Chief Election Commissioner on Monday, DawnNews reported.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took the oath from Ebrahim.

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee, 76, was declared elected the 13th President on Sunday.

The UPA nominee defeated the former Lok Sabha Speaker, P.A. Sangma, by 3,97,776 value votes. While Mr. Mukherjee polled 3,095 votes, (value 7,13,763) Mr. Sangma got 1,483 votes (3,15,987).

Mr. Mukherjee — who will be sworn in by Chief Justice of India S.H. Police defuse bomb planted on Karachi’s University Road

Karachi: Police defused a bomb planted near Safoora Chowrangi on Karachi’s University Road on Friday, DawnNews reported.

Police said the bomb, containing 15 to 16 kilograms of explosive material, had been planted near a school building.

The bomb was locally made and could have caused a major disaster however the bomb disposal squad managed to defuse it in time.

Beirut: Syrian activists say 310 people were killed across the country on Thursday in what was the single deadliest day of fighting since the beginning of the revolt against President Bashar Assad’s regime.

The Election Commission on Friday rejected Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s vote in the Presidential poll and directed the Returning Officer (RO) not to count it as the secrecy of the ballot had been violated.

“The issue of second ballot paper to Mulayam Singh Yadav was not warranted under rule 15 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. Therefore, the second ballot paper issued to Mr. Yadav may not be taken up for counting,” the Commission said.

A suicide attack at a Bulgarian airport which killed six people, five of them Israeli, was carried out by Lebanon's Hezbollah in conjunction with Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday.

Denver, Colorado: A masked gunman killed 14 people and wounded 50 others at a showing of new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises in the US city of Denver, the local police chief told CNN.

Denver's' KOA radio station said a figure in a gas mask had opened fire at the showing in a mall in the suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.

Dozens of police were at the scene, and the authorities evacuated the area while they checked if there was an explosive device in the area.

In the latest jab at Pakistan, the US House of Representatives has unanimously voted to cut military aid to it by a whopping USD 650 million, with a top Republican lawmaker calling the country "Benedict Arnold", the most well-known traitor in American history.

The amendment to cut the aid, which was proposed by Republican Congressman Ted Poe, passed on the floor of the House with a voice vote.
