Bus fall from Nepal mountain road kills 10

Kathmandu: A speeding bus plunged off a mountain road in western Nepal into a deep ravine on Tuesday killing 10 people, police said—the latest in a string of deadly accidents on the country’s highways.

The driver lost control on a sharp bend on the main route heading east from the city of Mahendranagar, on the country’s western border with India, 700 kilometres west of the capital Kathmandu.

“A micro-bus carrying 17 passengers slipped away from the road and fell 400 metres down below the hill, resulting in the death of 10 people on the spot,” Doti district deputy police superintendent Bharat Bahadur Bohara told AFP.

“The accident occurred on the hilly road because of excess speed,” Bohara said, adding that the seven other passengers were being treated in hospital

African extremist groups linking up: US general

WASHINGTON: Three of Africa’s largest extremist groups are sharing funds and swapping explosives in what could signal a dangerous escalation of security threats on the continent, the commander of the US military’s Africa Command said on Monday.

General Carter Ham said there are indications that Boko Haram, al Shabaab and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, groups that he labeled as the continent’s most violent, are sharing money and explosive materials while training fighters together.

“Each of those three organizations is by itself a dangerous and worrisome threat,” Ham said at an African Center for Strategic Studies seminar for senior military and civilian officials from Africa, the United States and Europe.

“What really concerns me is the indications that the three organizations are seeking to coordinate and synchronise their efforts,” Ham said. “That is a real problem for us and for African security in general.”

The United States classified three of the alleged leaders of the Islamist sect Boko Haram, based in remote northeast Nigeria, as “foreign terrorist,” on June 20. But it declined to blacklist the entire organization to avoid elevating the group’s profile internationally. Police in Nigeria said members of the group seized a prison there Sunday and freed 40 inmates.

Islamist militant group al Shabaab is active in war-ravaged Somalia and has been blamed for attacks in Kenya. Last year it claimed responsibility for the death of Somali Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Sheikh Hassan.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), an affiliate of al Qaeda based in North Africa, is mainly a criminal organization operating in the Sahel region. It kidnaps Westerners for ransom and aids Africa’s drug trade, according to intelligence officials.

Rupee up 11 paise against dollar

The rupee on Tuesday rose by 11 paise to 56.90 against the U.S. dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market as the American currency weakened against euro and other currencies overseas.

Besides, a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee, dealers said.

The domestic currency had ended 14 paise higher at Rs 57.01 after touching a fresh record low of Rs 57.92 against the dollar in yesterday’s highly volatile trade following RBI’s measures to stem the currency slide.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index Sensex recovered by 26.38 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 16,908.54.

General Allen will meet Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani to discuss the restoration. General Allen and Kayani will oversee the developments on implementation of cross-border contact as well.

Two US senators to discuss jailed Afridi

FRANKFORT: Two US lawmakers plan this week to press Pakistani Ambassador Sherry Rehman for the release of a doctor jailed after he helped to track down Osama bin Laden.

The meeting is the latest step in US Sen Rand Paul’s push to free Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani physician convicted of having ties to militants. The Kentucky congressman said he considers Afridi a hero.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell will host the Wednesday meeting at his Capitol office. A McConnell aide said the meeting is ”to discuss the bilateral relationship” between the US and Pakistan.

Paul sponsored an amendment earlier this month to the Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act to withhold US foreign aid to Pakistan until Afridi’s prison sentence is overturned and he’s allowed to leave Pakistan. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid initially blocked a vote on the proposal.

But Paul told The Associated Press he now has enough backing from fellow senators to force a vote, which he said he intends to do in July unless Afridi is released.

Afridi was convicted in May but is widely believed to have been targeted by Pakistani authorities because he helped the US track down bin Laden. Afridi ran a fake vaccination program designed to get DNA from the al Qaeda leader.

New Delhi: Separatist groups in Srinagar have called for a general strike on Tuesday to protest against Monday's fire at a 200-year-old Sufi Shrine Peer Dastageer Sahib.

The cause of the fire is still not known but the relics inside were safely recovered by officials.
The protestors alleged that firefighters arrived late on the scene to douse the flames.

Meanwhile, the government has ordered a probe by the Kashmir divisional commissioner. Authorities say the fire began from four areas of the shrine taking over most of the roof, but there is still no word on the cause.

Pakistan continues to be international migraine: Albright

New Delhi: Pakistan continues to be an "international migraine" with a host of problems like extremism, non-proliferation, poverty and a weak government, former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright says, adding that India can help resolve the migraine.Delivering a lecture here Monday night on "2012: A year of Political Change," Albright, who served under president Bill Clinton, took note of improving business ties between India and Pakistan and said in a lighter vein that India can resolve the "migraine."
Albright enumerated problems of ethnic conflicts, India-Pakistan relations, the situation in Afghanistan and tensions over the South China Sea as some of the problems that the world is confronting in the 21st century.
Noting that the US' ties with Pakistan continue to be difficult, Albright said that people continued to worry about nuclear weapons of Pakistan and their safety.
"Pakistan needs to learn how to deal with extremism and the issue of nuclear non-proliferation. The US is in a difficult situation to resolve this. It is central to many problems," she said.

Pakistan's faux pas leaves Sarabjit Singh's family shocked

New Delhi: There was a cruel twist for Indian prisoner in Pakistan Sarabjit Singh and his family. Hours after announcing that he would be released, Islamabad has confirmed that it's not him, but another Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh who is being sent home.

It was a major faux pas by the government, which means for now Sarabjit Singh will not be released. He has been in jail for the past 22 years after he was convicted in the 1990 serial blasts case. Zardari had commuted his death sentence to life and is considering Sarabjit's fifth mercy plea that was sent last month.

The clarification came over five hours after Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's spokesperson Farhatullah Babar confirmed that Sarabjit was to be released, sparking celebrations at his Jalandhar home.

"I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President (Ghulam) Ishaq (Khan) on the advice of (then premier) Benazir Bhutto," Farhatullah Babar said. Any references to President Asif Ali Zardari in the entire matter were "out of context", the presidential spokesman said.

Free Sarabjit, Krishna requests Pakistan

New Delhi: India Wednesday welcomed the release of Surjeet Singh from a Pakistani jail and renewed its "request" to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to also free Sarabjit Singh and all Indian prisoners who had completed their sentences.

"I have seen media reports about release from imprisonment in Pakistan, of Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. I welcome this decision and further renew our request to the president of Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh who has been in custody for well over two decades and is serving a death sentence," said External Affairs Minister SM Krishna.

The appeal came after Pakistan's apparent volte-face about releasing Sarabjit Singh. On June 26, the Pakistani media had carried reports of Sarabjit getting a presidential pardon. However, Islamabad clarified late evening that it was not Sarabjit but Surjeet Singh, his fellow inmate at Kot Lakhpat jail, who would be released.

?Pakistan blunder on Sarabjit, Surjeet: mistake or mischief

New Delhi: There was a cruel twist of fate for Indian prisoner in Pakistan Sarabjit Singh and his family. Hours after announcing that he would be released, Islamabad has confirmed that it's not him, but another Indian prisoner Surjeet Singh who is being sent home.

However, the big question is whether the faux pas by Pakistan is really a genuine mistake or a mischief. Surjeet had already served his life sentence and was due for release. He didn't need Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's signature on his release order.

Meanwhile Sarabjit's lawyer Awais Sheikh said that Pak acted irresponsibly. Awais is hopeful that Pakistan will release Sarabjit Singh soon.
