Politicians have long headed cricket associations in India. The Shiv Sena has, however, taken the practice a step forward.Over the past few months, Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aditya have bought two Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) clubs — Merry Cricketers and Young Friends Union Cricket Club — while at least two more have been bought by associates. And word in the MCA is that the Sena is in talks with 10 more clubs, which will help them during the MCA elections set to be held in 2013.
One has to be either a club owner or be nominated by a club to stand for MCA elections.
This is the first time in the MCA’s history that a well-known politician has bought a cricket club. Former MCA presidents Sharad Pawar and Manohar Joshi, current MCA chief Vilasrao Deshmukh and Congress leader Narayan Rane all represented clubs in the association, but never owned any.
“Mr Uddhav and Aditya have bought two MCA clubs,” confirmed MCA chief executive officer C S Naik. Apart from these, Wellington Cricket Club will be represented by Rajat R Mehta, Aditya’s classmate and close friend from Bombay Scottish school, while New Hindu Cricket Club is being represented by Milind Narvekar, a personal secretary to Uddhav.
On Tuesday evening, Aditya, who heads the Shiv Sena youth wing, spent nearly an hour in the MCA office here. Asked whether he would contest the MCA elections, Aditya said: “I was just here (MCA office) to register my team, the elections are still a long way away.”
