Public rage against corruption is now reaching such a stage that it cannot be long before ordinary Ukrainians force change, believes Valentyna Telychenko, the lawyer who is defending former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
And that change can only come from the grassroots, she says, because the upper echelons of the government and legal system are so locked in a mosaic of corrupt relationships as to make to make it impossible.
Telychenko spoke to Asian Affairs as international tensions rose over the treatment of Tymoshenko and British government ministers boycotted fixtures in Ukraine of the Euro 2012 football championships being co-hosted with Poland. Other European Union leaders are also staying away from the four-yearly festival of sport. But so far there is little overt sign that EU pressure is having any impact in Kiev: barely half way through the competition prosecutors announced that as soon as she recovers from current health problems Tymoshenko will face charges of murder in the killing of a businessman who was gunned down in Donetsk in 1996.
These new charges are just the latest indication that the government's motivation is to ensure that Tymoshenko cannot possibly hope to be eligible when registration for candidates for the next general election in October closes on August 13
