Three persons have died in landslips and flash floods triggered by heavy rains in the hill region of Pulloorampara in Kozhikode district while four persons are reported missing, police said on Tuesday.

A 75-year-old man, who was injured when flash floods washed away his house on Monday, succumbed to injuries in hospital, while a body of another aged man was recovered Tuesday morning, police said. The body of a three-year-old boy was recovered on Monday.

Search for four missing persons is going on, but the heavy rain that has been lashing the hill region was hampering relief work, sources said.

About 30 houses have been washed away in flash floods.

The downpour caused four landslips in Pullorampara and several roads were swept away while large boulders and stones fell on the roads.

Two small bridges connecting the region to Kuttiyadi and Mananthavadi have been submerged.

There was a let-up in the rains that has been lashing Iritty in Kannur district since Monday. Low lying areas, including 50 shops in Iritty town, were inundated, sources said.

Kozhikode city was also experiencing heavy rain since Monday night and district authorities have opened control rooms at the Collectorate.
Meanwhile eight shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out near the Second Railway Gate in Kozhikode at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

Eye witnesses said that the fire started from a kitchen of a hotel and spread to neighbouring shops including a
hardware store selling paints. This resulted in fire engulfing more shops in the vicinity.

However no casualty was reported.

Security guards alerted the hotel employees sleeping inside about the fire. The personnel attached to the Department of Fire and Rescue Services doused the flames from creating more damage.  A fire unit

from Malappuram district was called to extinguish the fire in a two-hour operation. However a heavy downpour lessened the task for the fire brigade.

The loss to property has not been estimated. The exact cause of the fire is also unknown. However preliminary examination revealed that short circuit could have triggered the fire. Most shops in the city
