LONDON: Pakistan on Sunday avoided a major scare when they bounced back from a goal down to edge South Africa 5-4 and stay alive at London 2012 Olympic Games here at a rain-soaked Riverbank Arena.Needing a straight forward win to remain in contention for a place in the semifinals, the Pakistanis lived dangerously before scoring twice during the last five minutes of the pulsating encounter.
It were the team’s senior duo of Sohail Abbas and Waseem Ahmed, who pulled the Green-shirts out of what was a very tight spot, giving them much-needed victory points following a morale-shattering 4-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Great Britain last Friday.
Pakistan were down 3-4 with less than six minutes to go and it seemed that their campaign for an elusive Olympic medal would be washed away by the spirited South Africans under heavy rain.
But Sohail finally converted a short corner with a lighting flick and later Waseem showed why he is still regarded among Pakistan’s most dangerous players by scoring a superb goal to help his team take its points tally to seven points from four matches.
A victory against Australia — the current world number ones on Tuesday (tomorrow) — can put Pakistan in the Olympic semis for the first time since Sydney 2000.
“It was a tough match but the important thing is that we managed full three points from it,” Khawaja Junaid, the Pakistan coach, told ‘The News’. “There were many anxious moments but our boys didn’t lose hope and won the match in the last few minutes,” he added.
Apart from Sohail and Waseem, two more players with key roles in saving Pakistan were youngsters Abdul Haseem Khan and Shafqat Rasool.
The mercurial Haseem was involved in Pakistan’s first three goals out of which he scored two. Shafqat had a goal but more importantly he was instrumental in keeping in the hunt at a time when the team’s senior strikers — Shakeel Abbasi and Rehan Butt — were unable to impress much.
