Beirut: Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab has defected to the opposition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday, as state media reported his abrupt sacking just two months after his appointment.“Riad Hijab has defected from the regime,” the Britain-based watchdog’s director, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP.
If confirmed, it would be highest-ranking defection of the 17-month uprising.
Earlier on Monday, Syrian state television reported that Hijab had been sacked.
“Prime Minister Riad Hijab has been dismissed,” the television reported.
Moreover, Rami Abdel Rahman, had also told AFP in Beirut that Hijab had fled Syria.
