The Valley Media focused on the following issues:
The role that was played by the politicians in the creation of the Kashmir problem and the political unrest in the State.
Agencies from both sides of the border had also set up shop to keep the situation turbulent.
It was necessary for the separatist groups to define a proper agenda as at present each faction had its own agenda with some believing in self-determination and others being in favour of negotiations.
There were also differences between the agendas of the mainstream parties with the NC calling for a restoration to pre-1953 while the PDP spoke about joint-control and self-rule. The media commented that at present the concept of self-determination appeared to be irrelevant. India and Pakistan had to negotiate to arrive at a solution.
The statement of Pakistan’s Foreign Minister that India and Pakisan needed to forget the past distruct and move ahead with bilateral relations. Similar comments had also come from the Indian Foreign Minister who said continues confrontation, tension and war were not an option and that India wanted a strong and stable Pakistan. The important factor would be the attitude of the Pakistan army.
The report on the recent Foreign Secretary levels talks between India and Pakistan with the media stating that the discussions appeared to be routine with no tangible results.
Criticism of Syed Ali Shah Geelani for his regular calls for strikes. Geelani had formed a separate organization because other members of the Hurriyat had been opposed to his approach.
But the media commented that Geelani was the only leader in the valley who had not changed his stance and therefore enjoyed support of the people. The media was critical of the fact that while Geelani was willing to meet non-governmental persons from India, he refused to participate in the negotiations with the government interlocutors.
