Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday urged the Centre to abolish Army recruitment based on “recruitable male population” (population-based quota system) and instead replace it with capability and merit, as done in the past, to enable more Punjabis to join the armed forces.
Addressing a gathering here after inaugurating the first NCC Academy of the country, along with the Union Minister of State for Defence M Mangapatti Pallam Raju, Badal said there was a time when Punjabis dominated the Army. “But the state had suffered adversely after the Centre adopted the criteria of recruitment on the basis of Recruitable Male population in a state, as a result of which, the share of Punjab in the Army was restricted because it constitutes only 2.5 per cent of the national population,” he added.

Following this, while maintaining that it was a policy matter, Raju said that he will take up the issue with the Union government.
While saying that Sunday was was a “Red Letter Day” for Punjab, as two NCC training academies were being inaugurated at Rupnagar and Malout, Badal added: “It is indeed a matter of pride that Punjab was the first state in the country to have two world class training centres for imparting coaching to NCC cadets.” With this, around 55,000 cadets from the state will be imparted training for joining Army, Navy and Air Force under one roof, he said.
Meanwhile, speaking about infiltration from across the border, Raju said: “We are strengthening our border surveillance and the monitoring systems are being updated to check movement from across the border.”
