Mission to study measures taken by government to eradicate forced dissapearances
ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) will make its first visit to Pakistan from September 10 to 20 on the invitation of the government, said a press statement on Thursday.
During the mission, UN experts will gather information on cases of forced disappearances pending before the Working Group (WG).
They will also study the measures adopted by the state to prevent and eradicate forced disappearances, including issues related to truth, justice and reparation to the victims.
The WG will visit various parts of the country and meet with state officials, both at federal and provincial levels, as well as with representatives of civil society organisations, relatives of missing people and representatives of relevant UN agencies.
The WG will be represented by Chair Rapporteur Olivier de Frouville and Member Osman El-Hajjé.
The independent experts will be accompanied by members of the Secretariat of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The WG will hold a press conference to the end of the visit, on September 20 at 15:00 in Islamabad.
A final report on the mission will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in 2013.
The Working Group comprises five independent experts from all around the world. The chair rapporteur is Olivier de Frouville (France) and the other members are Ariel Dulitzky (Argentina), Jasminka Dzumhur (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Osman El-Hajjé (Lebanon), and Jeremy Sarkin (South Africa).
The independent experts will be accompanied by members of the Secretariat of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
