LAHORE: The responsibility of picking a name for the position of caretaker chief minister of Punjab was referred to the Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday, reported Express News.
The third and final meeting of the six-member parliamentary committee ended without a decision on a name for the position.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, committee head Rana Sanaullah said “This is not about a deadlock; this move is a part of the constitution. We all agree that the ECP should resolve the matter.”
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominated journalist Najam Sethi, Justice (r) Zahid Hussain, while the PML-N suggested the names of Justice (r) Amir Raza Khan and Khawaja Zaheer, a former bureaucrat.
No reason was provided for the failure in agreeing upon a candidate.
Sources said that Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) was concerned that the election commission might pick a candidate presented by the PPP, so they have decided to call a review meeting of the parliamentary committee.
Shahbaz Sharif met Rana Sanaullah and asked all the members of the parliamentary committee to not leave the city as a review meeting could be called, the sources added.
