Senior Jamaat leader gets death sentence in Bangladesh's war crimes trial



Dhaka: A top leader of Bangladesh's fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami party was today sentenced to death for "crimes against humanity", including genocide and religious persecution, during the country's 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.

Suicide bomber attacks Afghan army bus; 7 wounded



KABUL: A suicide bomber attacked a bus carrying Afghan soldiers to work in the capital early Wednesday, wounding seven people in an explosion that engulfed the undercarriage of the bus in flames, officials and witnesses said.


Australian Muslim activists lose free speech case


Two Muslim activists accused of sending offensive letters to families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan narrowly lost a court appeal Wednesday that cited their constitutional freedom of speech.

Iranian-born Man Horan Monis, a self-styled Sydney cleric also known as Sheik Haron, was charged in 2009 with 12 counts of using as postal service in an offensive way and one count of using a postal service in a harassing way. Amirah Droudis was charged with aiding and abetting the offences.

The six judges of the High Court split on whether the charges were compatible with Australians’ right to free speech. When the nation’s highest court is undecided, an appeal is dismissed and the lower court decision stands.


At least 18 killed in devastating fire in Kolkata



KOLKATA :At least 18 people were killed and four others sustained severe burn injuries when a fire engulfed a market housing a godown-cum-office complex in central Kolkata’s Sealdah area in the small hours of Wednesday.

Navy officer shot dead


An officer of the Pakistan Navy was killed at the Karachi Port Trust(KPT) on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Commander Azeem Haider, was killed when gunmen opened fire on the Naval officers vehicle. Security Sources said that there might be a possible attack planned.

It was speculated that Lt Haider was investigating the PNS Mehran attack but security forces later denied that he had any involvement in the investigation.

Lt Haider was shot three times on the chest. He was shifted to PNS Shifa Hospital where he succumbed to his injuies.

ISLAMABAD - In a twisted turn of events, the rapist and killer of a minor girl on Tuesday also confessed to killing two other girls, including a daughter of serving superintendent of police (SP) of Islamabad, Pakistan Today has learnt.

Police sources told Pakistan Today that a couple of months ago, the accused Ibrar Ahmed, in connivance with his girlfriend cum accomplice, Mehak Qaisar, killed a young daughter of a serving SP.

Last year, the dead body of SP’s daughter was found in her bedroom in mysterious circumstances at Margalla Valley, Bharakau.

Egypt hot air balloon crash kills 18 tourists



A hot air balloon flying over Egypt's ancient city of Luxor caught fire and crashed into a sugar cane field on Tuesday, killing at least 18 foreign tourists, a security official said.

It was one of the worst accidents involving tourists in Egypt and likely to push the key tourism industry deeper into recession.


Railway budget 2013-14: 67 express, 26 passenger trains introduced



As many as 67 express trains and 26 passenger trains are being introduced this year, Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal announced on Tuesday.

Presenting the 2013-14 Railway Budget, Mr. Bansal also said that five Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMUs) are being introduced this year besides eight DEMUs.


Policeman killed in fresh attack on polio team



PESHAWAR: A policeman was shot dead Tuesday while protecting a polio vaccination team, police said, bringing the death toll in such attacks to 20 since December.

MQM seeks poll ban on fake degree holders


LAHORE: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Raza Haroon on Sunday called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to stop all those holding fake educational degrees from contesting the elections.

Talking to reporters after an MQM delegation held talks with Dr Tahirul Qadri and leaders of his Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT), Mr Haroon expressed surprise that the politicians who had earlier raised the issue of fake degrees had now changed their stance.

The other members of the MQM delegation were Nasreen Jalil, Saif Yar Khan and Adil Sheikh. Dr Raheeq Abbasi and Qazi Faiz represented the PAT at the talks.


Seven militants killed in Khyber Agency



LANDI KOTAL, Feb 24: At least seven militants were killed and some of their hideouts destroyed in air strikes and a clash in Tirah and Bara areas of Khyber Agency on Sunday.

Officials said that fighter planes bombed Taliban positions in Kukikhel area of Tirah.

Hong Kong: A 101-year-old Sikh believed to be the world’s oldest distance runner retired on Sunday after ending his last race in Hong Kong on a high, describing it as one of the “happiest days” of his long life.

Fauja Singh, nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado”, finished the 10-kilometre (6 mile) run at the Hong Kong Marathon in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds—half a minute faster than at the same event last year.


Pakistan hit by nationwide blackout



ISLAMABAD : Pakistan was hit by a nationwide blackout for more than two hours after the breakdown of a major plant caused power stations to stop working across the country, officials said Monday.

While power cuts are common in Pakistan due to chronic underinvestment in infrastructure, outages across the whole country are rare.

Lahore: Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh has signed a fresh appeal seeking clemency that is addressed to the people of Pakistan and President Asif Ali Zardari, his lawyer said on Friday. "Sarabjit has signed an appeal addressed jointly to the people of Pakistan and President Zardari and it will be sent to him (Zardari) for consideration," Awais Sheikh, the counsel for the Indian national, said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday condemned bomb attacks that killed at least 15 people in the Indian city of Hyderabad, saying “all acts of terrorism are unjustifiable regardless of their motivation”.


Iraq gives go-ahead for Iranian pipeline to Syria



BAGHDAD : Iraq has approved the construction of a natural gas pipeline across its territory that will connect Iran to key ally Syria. The move likely to strengthen Tehran's influence over its neighbors.

The Iraqi Cabinet said in a statement Tuesday evening that it has instructed the country's oil minister to sign a framework agreement for the $10 billion project, allowing the pipeline to move ahead.


Thirty nine Quetta victims airlifted to Karachi; woman dies


KARACHI: One of the 39 wounded victims of the Quetta blast being airlifted to the city along with their relatives died during the journey in the early hours of Thursday.

At least 87 people were killed and over hundred others, mostly belonging to the Shia Hazara community were wounded in the blast on Tirani Road last Saturday.

According to police investigators, between 800 and 1,000 kilos of explosives were used in the blast.

The wounded victims brought to the city from Quetta on a C-130 plane of Pakistan Air Force include 18 women and 10 children.


Mukherjee sees progress in ties with Pakistan



NEW DELHI: India sees progress in ties with Pakistan in spite of recent hiccups on the Line of Control in Kashmir, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday.

In his address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of its budget session, he said: “With Pakistan, we have made progress towards normalisation of relations, strengthening mechanism for bilateral trade and facilitating greater people-to-people contact.”

No intelligence about specific area in Hyderabad: Shinde



New Delhi: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is not yet ready to blame the police for the twin blasts that rocked Dilsukh Nagar in Hyderabad on Thursday evening. Mentioning that the death toll had risen to 14 and that the list of the injured had increased to 119, the Home Minister said that he doesn't think the police has failed, "at the moment".

Trinamool workers allegedly chop off panchayat employee's ear



KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress workers allegedly chopped off the ear of a panchayat worker in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Thursday for joining the two-day nationwide strike by major trade unions, police said.


"We have received information of the incident but no complaint has been registered so far," an officer of Jalangi police station, under which the incident happened, said.

The incident occurred in Jalangi in Murshidabad district, some 200 km from Kolkata, when Hazrat Omar, a panchayat worker arrived at his office on Thursday.

"I was sitting in the office when some Trinamool Congress goons came and asked why I was absent from office yesterday (Wednesday) and before I could reply they attacked me with a knife and cut a major portion of my left ear," said Omar.

Omar, who is undergoing treatment in a hospital, said he will file a police complaint after he is discharged.

Adhir Chowdhury, Congress parliamentarian from Berhampore constituency in the district, condemned the incident and demanded immediate punishment for the guilty.
