Will neither reject nor endorse Narendra Modi: Madani

HYDERABAD: Maulana Mehmood Madani, general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and former member of Rajya Sabha, who created a stir a few months ago by stating that the Muslims of Gujarat have begun to shed their antagonism towards Narender Modi, declined to either reject or endorse Modi's possible candidature as Prime Minister.

The Maulana, who was slammed for softening his stand on Modi, told TOI over phone from New Delhi, "It is for the BJP to decide on its PM candidate. Why should I make a comment at this stage for or against Modi. I am a Muslim but I am also a responsible citizen like any other secular Indian. I will wait and respond."

However, his tactical silence on the issue is likely to be interpreted by several sections as endorsement of Modi's candidature for PM post. Also, it could be taken as his warning to the Congressto stop taking him lightly.

On his controversial statement that the Muslims in Gujarat have begun to accept Modi's leadership, the Maulana had admitted on a TV channel that justice was denied to Muslims. "Modi was the chief minister when anti-Muslim riots took place in Gujarat. Unhone raj dharma ko nahi nibhaya aur na kabhi fasadat par afsos ka izhar kiya (he did not follow his duty, nor did he say he was sorry). He should be punished for his role in failing to protect Muslims in his state."

At the same time he said he would not desist from commenting on what is happening against the Muslims in Maharashtra and other states where 'secularists' are ruling. Why has the government not taken action against the policemen involved in firing against the Muslims in Dhule (Maharashtra)? Why were the Muslims left behind in development in West Bengal for so many decades? he asked.

When asked whether he was diluting the 2002 Gujarat riots issue by talking about the situation of Muslims in other states, he retorted, "No. While we talk about the injustice in Gujarat how can we forget what is happening to the Muslims in other states?" he said. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he said, has not taken any action against the chief ministers in the states where her party is ruling for 'atrocities' against the Muslims. He also wanted to know why the Congress was not pushing for the Communal Violence Bill.
