Thirty nine Quetta victims airlifted to Karachi; woman dies

KARACHI: One of the 39 wounded victims of the Quetta blast being airlifted to the city along with their relatives died during the journey in the early hours of Thursday.

At least 87 people were killed and over hundred others, mostly belonging to the Shia Hazara community were wounded in the blast on Tirani Road last Saturday.

According to police investigators, between 800 and 1,000 kilos of explosives were used in the blast.

The wounded victims brought to the city from Quetta on a C-130 plane of Pakistan Air Force include 18 women and 10 children.

As many as 34 wounded victims were admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital, while four victims were admitted to the neighbouring Liaquat National Hospital, said Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen Deputy Secretary General Maulana Sadiq Raza Taqvi while speaking to Dawn.

He added that one of the wounded women, Gul Afshan, had died during the flight. “Her body has been sent back to Quetta.”

All the 38 victims were said to be in a critical condition which was why they were airlifted to Karachi, said the MWM leader.

He said that an attendant was accompanying each of the wounded victims.

“Three patients are being provided treatment at the burns unit of the Liaquat National Hospital,” said an attendant of one of the patients, Fatima, while speaking to Dawn.

“My mother suffered burn wounds in the blast,” said Mr Raza. He quoted doctors as saying that she might have to undergo a surgery.

As per the agreement reached between the federal government’s representatives and Shia organisations, the provincial government of Balochistan would bear the expenses of medical treatment of all the wounded victims, said Maulana Taqvi.
