AHMEDABAD: A 23-year-old student of an engineering college in Nadiad in Kheda district has been arrested for sending an email threatening terror attacks to a news channel. A team of the Kheda local crime branch (LCB) nabbed the accused on Sunday evening. Investigators said the mail was sent to settle personal scores.
In Saturday's message to the TV channel, the accused identified himself as a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative. He owned responsibility for the recent Hyderabad blasts and warned the state police of further attacks in Gujarat. The mail said the terror outfit planned to plant explosives at four places: the state legislative assembly, Kalupur railway station, Dharmsinh Desai University (DDU) in Nadiad and BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. It demanded Rs 50 crore for averting the attack. The mail contained four mobile numbers, identified as those of the senders.
The TV channel's officials sent the mail to police officials and the state anti-terrorist squad to investigate.
Kheda superintendent of police Makrand Chauhan told TOI that soon after getting the mail, the police traced the IP address of the sender to Nadiad. "With the help of technical surveillance, we identified the computer at a cyber cafe located on Vaniyavaad Road," he said. "We then got the logs of the users and ascertained the time of sending the mail."
The culprit was identified as Shivam Vyas, a resident of Yashashwi Flat, Nadiad. Vyas is a fourth-semester student of IT engineering at DDU.
"During questioning, he said he had mentioned four mobile numbers of individuals to settle scores," said an LCB official. "He was in love with a girl but when he was snubbed, he decided to harass them and mentioned their names and numbers in the mail, and even forged their signatures. He did not expect such swift police action and was caught unawares when the police came knocking on his door."
