Bomb at outdoor market kills five in Baghdad



BAGHDAD: Iraqi authorities say a bomb at an outdoor market in Baghdad has killed at least five people.Police officials say the blast went off Sunday morning at the crowded market in the primarily Shia neighborhood of Amil in southwestern Baghdad.The police said 12 other people were wounded in the attack. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures.




All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to media.Iraq has seen a surge in militant attacks and violence since a deadly April crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in a northern town.At least 90 people have died in attacks in Iraq so far this month, according to an Associated Press count.Earlier on Saturday, shootings targeting a row of liquor stores in the capital and other attacks killed at least 15 people across Iraq, officials said.Police officials said gunmen in two speeding cars opened fire on the stores in the northern neighborhood of Waziriyah, killing nine people and wounding four others. Islamic extremists have frequently targeted liquor stores in Iraq, but alcohol remains available in most cities.
