Gunmen storm Pakistan airport, leaving at least 18 dead

Pakistani officials said Monday that 18 people were killed when gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan's busiest airport Sunday night with machine guns and a rocket launcher.

Rizwan Akhtar, the paramilitary Rangers chief, said that all 10 "terrorists" who attacked the Jinnah International Airport have been killed. Akhtar added that Pakistani forces were combing through the terminal and would hand it back to civilian authority later Monday.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, named after the founder of Pakistan, nor a near-simultaneous suicide bombing in Baluchistan province that killed at least 23. However, the attacks come as government-led peace talks with the local Taliban faction and other militants have floundered in recent weeks.

Akhtar said that some of the attackers appeared to be Uzbeks.

Dr. Seemi Jamali from Karachi's Jinnah Hospital says 11 of the bodies brought to the morgue were of airport security personnel.
