Pak-Iran cooperation to help resolve Afghanistan issue

ISLAMABAD: Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman, National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis-e-Shura Islami of Iran testified that Iran is supplying arms and ammunition to Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad stating the support is purely based on principles and not religious denominations.

He said Iran is not sure not sure that United States would quit Afghanistan by 2014 and said that United States intends to counter Iran, Russia and China through it’s presence in Afghanistan. Iran is concerned over the post 2014 scenario of Afghanistan and cooperation among Pakistan and Iran at political level would help achieve desired results.

Speaking at a policy seminar on “Pakistan and Iran in a Changing Global Scenario” at PIPS organized by Senate Committee on Defence and Defence Production. He said Iran’s support has resulted in victory for the Hamas. He mentioned that support is purely based on principles and not religious denominations as Hamas and Islamic Jihad are Sunni organisations and Hazebullah is Shia. Iran’s Defence Strategy had no room for an atomic bomb and it upholds its right to peaceful civilian nuclear programme, he said, adding that Iran has acquired uranium enrichment and it’s development technology.

At present Iran is preparing satellite guided missiles for enhancing it’s defence capabilities. Iran would continue to acquire nuclear knowledge for it’s programmes. Boroujerdi said that not allowing access to it’s all nuclear installations was part of its defence strategy, however, he mentioned that nothing is secret about Iran’s nuclear programme.

About the landing of a US drone RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft last year by Iranian Army’s electronic warfare unit, Mr. Boroujerdi revealed that Iran successfully brought down the American drone last December and was hoping to achieve the same technology through reverse engineering. Iran is in a process of preparing it’s own drones through reverse engineering of US Drone and in near future Iran’s drones would be in the skies for it’s defence.

Boroujerdi disclosed that Iran’s model drone “Ayub” has successfully flew over Israel and has been able to capture picture of it’s sensitive sights which helped Hamas to achieve it’s targets. He stressed on the necessity of enhancing economic and defence cooperation between the two countries reiterating that Iran was committed to the energy pipeline project with Pakistan.

Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee Mushahid Hussain Sayed speaking on the occasion called for stronger political, economic and security ties, saying it was very much possible because the two countries did not have any conflict of interest.
