ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday asked Afghanistan to take steps to create conducive conditions for voluntary and dignified return of Afghan refugees to their country.
This was discussed during a meeting between President Hamid Karzai and Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Eng Shaukatullah, who called on him. The Minister requested President Karzai to appeal Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan to return to their country and play their role in its reconstruction and rebuilding. The Afghan president thanked the people and government of Pakistan for hosting and assisting million of Afghan refugees for more than three decades.
The two sides emphasised the need for further promoting bilateral cooperation in the areas of mutual benefits, said a press release issued from Kabul. The SAFRON minister is on a three-day official visit to Afghanistan. He visited the sites where the returnees from Pakistan are residing. He visited the Kuchi Abad Township in Kabul and held a meeting with the elders of the returnees and listened to their problems.
Shaukatullah assured them that he would take up their problems at the concerned forum. The minister also held meetings with Afghan Minister for Refugees and Repatriation Affairs Dr Jamahir Anwari, and Senior Adviser to President Karzai on International Relations, Dr Yahya Marufi. He discussed with them issues relating to the voluntary return of Afghan refugees and sought their cooperation to expedite the repatriation process of the refugees.
