PPM seeks Supreme Court ruling on secret vote

Government Coalition partner PPM has filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking the court’s ruling on the decision taken by the People’s Majlis yesterday to follow a secret vote procedure in impeachment motions on the President or Vice President and on no confidence votes on ministers.

In filing the case PPM Legal Counsel Mohamed Waheed has said the decision made by the Majlis to take a secret vote in these cases is illegal and therefore it is important to annul the decision.

Parliamentary Group of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that their number one priority in the Peoples’Majlis is to bring down the government.



In a press conference held by the MDP regarding the passing the amendments proposed to the Standing Orders of the Majlis to conduct no-confidence motions on President and Members of the Cabinet through secret vote, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Iboo) said that the top most priority of the party in the Majlis is to bring an end to the current government.

Bilateral relation between Maldives and India has hit an all- time low in the aftermath of some controversial decisions taken by the island nation, says India’s Mail Today report.

According to the news agency, the Indian government has upped the ante, freezing major aid promised to Maldives in the recent past.
