Singapore urges North Korea to work with international community

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that it "deeply regrets" North Korea's rocket launch on Wednesday, which surprised the world with its timing.

In a statement, the ministry says the launch was a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

"We deeply regret this defiance of the concerns of the international community. This does not serve the best interests of the people of the DPRK," it said, referring to the country by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The ministry added: "We strongly urge the DPRK government to refrain from further actions that would escalate tensions and work with the international community to preserve peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula."
