New year, new low: India lose ODI series to Pakistan at home

KOLKATA: Team Pakistan, having had to live the life of gypsies since March 2009, showed they had the bite and bravado to hunt away from home. On Thursday at the Eden Gardens — Pakistan's happy hunting ground — Misbah's men clinched an 85-run victory over India in the second ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

In doing so, they extended their all-win record at the ground to four. Pakistan had last won an ODI series in India in 2005 when they came back from being 0-2 down to clinch the issue 4-2.

On Thursday, after setting India a modest 251-run victory target, Pakistan dismissed their rivals for 165 with two overs to spare, their new-ball bowlers setting things up with fiery swing bowling before the spinners came to mop things up.

Captain Dhoni, who had remained unbeaten on a heroic 113 in a losing cause in Chennai on Sunday, was again left stranded on 54. The impressive Junaid Khan and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal picked up three wickets each while the seasoned Umar Gul had two. It was again the batsmen who let the hosts down after the bowlers did well to pull Pakistan back from 141 for no loss in the 24th over to 250 all out. It's another thing that it proved good enough against a batting line-up that is fast losing its aura.

The difference in class between the two new-ball attacks was evident as soon as the Indian reply began with Pakistan's two left-armers exploiting the muggy conditions well. Swinging and seaming the ball both ways, Junaid and Mohammad Irfan proved to be a handful for Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. While the seven-feet-one-inch Irfan was about disconcerting bounce, Junaid was showing why he is considered special.

When the breakthrough came, in the 10th over, Gambhir was left cursing himself for dragging one from outside off on to his stumps. Junaid removed new man Virat Kohli in his next over, wicketkeeper Kamran pulling off an acrobatic catch as the batsman got a glove to one swinging down the leg-side. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, realising that they had to make the early dent after a disappointing total, had the two going and it paid the dividends. The more experienced Umar Gul, who replaced Irfan at the High Court end, added to the Indian misery by trapping Sehwag with one that came in sharply off the pitch and then getting Yuvraj Singh within a short one.

It was again left to skipper Dhoni to script the recovery act but with the Pakistan spinners keeping things tight, the asking rate rose alarmingly. When Suresh Raina was out stumped while trying to get a move on, India were reduced to 95/5 after 26 overs. Pakistan just tightened the screws from there.

Earlier, the Pakistan innings was again anchored by Nasir Jamshed but the visitors couldn't quite capitalise on a solid platform laid by the left-hander and Mohammad Hafeez, the two adding 141 runs in an opening stand. Nasir, whose unbeaten 101 carried Pakistan past India in Chennai, notched up his third consecutive century against the arch-rivals while Hafeez, a former KKR player, contributed a 74-ball 76.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who replaced the out-of-form Rohit Sharma, broke the partnership by castling Hafeez. Though Nasir continued in ominous fashion, the Indians chipped away at the other end. The run-out of Azhar Ali and a blooper by umpire Vineet Kulkarni, that saw the experienced Younus Khan depart leg-before despite an edge on to pad, didn't help Pakistan.
