Owaisi sent to 14-day judicial custody

Hyderabad: All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, who was arrested on charges of not cooperating with the police on the hate speech case levelled against him, has been taken to 14 days of judicial custody. According to sources, the MIM man was arrested as the police was not convinced by his explanation that he went to London to get medical treatment. On Tuesday night, Owaisi was taken to Nirmal in Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh where an FIR had been registered against him over the hate speech. His father, meanwhile, accused the police of arbitrarily arresting Owaisi and said the MLA could fall seriously ill due to the stress caused following the arrest.

He said his son never sought to escape from law and that the police was treating him in a harsh way. Owaisi was arrested soon after his medical report was issued following a test at a Hyderabad hospital. Two FIRs were registered suo motu against Owaisi at Adilabad and Nizamabad districts while a third case was filed by the Osmania University police after he allegedly delivered hate speeches against a particular community last month. He had been booked under Sections 153A, 295A and 121 of the IPC. The MIM MLA returned from London on Monday morning but was not arrested at Hyderabad airport. The BJP slammed the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh, accusing it of shielding Owaisi.
