Expressing solidarity with the Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Punjab Association has decided that it will not celebrate Baisakhi this year.
The executive committee of the Association, which met recently, voted to cancel celebrations that usually take place at Anna Adarsh College.
“Our celebrations usually involve a lot of fun, gaiety, dancing and singing. But with Tamils in Sri Lanka suffering, how can we be happy? We thought it would not be appropriate to have the festivities at the college this year,” said Ramesh Lamba, general secretary of the association.
“All our efforts in the 75 years of existence of our institutions have been to give back to the Tamil community that helped us during the partition,” said Ajay Bhalla, Association treasurer.
