Military ‘decides’ declining UN team’s request for meeting


ISLAMABAD - The military’s top command has decided to decline the UN mission’s request for holding meeting with the senior army officials in connection with the missing persons’ issue.
The defence ministry had communicated to the military General Headquarters (GHQ) about the UN delegation’s request on Wednesday after receiving the same from the foreign ministry the same day, the security officials said.
The issue, the officials said, was taken up for discussion at the Corps Commanders Conference on Thursday chaired by the Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The meeting also discussed other security related and operational matters.
Earlier, a reported proposal regarding the meeting between Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Khalid Majeed Wyne, Pakistan’s highest-ranked military official and Olivier de Frouville, the Chair-Rapporteur, United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), was said to have been turned down by the CJCSC.
The four member UN delegation includes the world body’s two credible and independent experts who are here till coming Thursday for collecting privy information and related facts pertaining to the rising number of allegedly state-sponsored abductions and killings in Pakistan with particular reference to Balochistan.
