Missing persons: UN mission meets nationalist parties

QUETTA: A delegation of the UN Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances, headed by Olivier de Frouville, on Sunday held meetings with delegations of various nationalist parities for the second consecutive day to know about human rights violations and situation of missing persons in Balochistan.

Separate delegations of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Jamhoori Watan Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Hazara Qaumi Jirga and Shia Conference called on the delegation.

BNP-M leader Dr Jahanzaib Jamaldini along with other party members, including Secretary Information Agha Hassan Baloch and Khurshid Jamaldini, told reporters that they had presented a list of 62 leaders of BNP, including party’s Central Secretary General Habib Jalib Baloch, who were victims of targeted killing, adding that they had told the UN officials that the killings were part of a conspiracy.

“The number of missing persons in Balochistan is above 14,000, however, the party has prepared a list of 1,000 missing persons and has already dispatched it to the UN and other international organisations of human rights. The list also mentions 480 decomposed bodies found dumped in various desolate areas of Balochistan,” Jamaldini said.

He said there were widespread violations of human rights in Balochistan, “which were started during the dictatorial regime of Pervez Musharraf and have continued without any respite”.

“BNP urged the UN and other international human rights organisations to play their due role in ending violation of human rights in Balochistan, otherwise a human tragedy could take place because a series of atrocities is underway in Balochistan and through a well-knitted plan, political leaders and activists are being eliminated so that nobody could raise voice against the plundering of resources of Balochistan,” he added.

To a question, the BNP secretary information said the UN working group had informed the party’s leaders that they had met with a large number of people and that it appeared that there was something wrong due to which the people were worried and anxious.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with the UN delegation, Jahmoori Watan Party chief Talal Akbar Bugti said he had apprised the UN officials about the extra-judicial arrests, enforced disappearances, violations of human rights and mutilated bodies in Balochistan.

“More than 13,000 people are missing in Balochistan. As we have no access to other areas, the JWP delegation presented a list of only 650 missing persons with complete details,” he added.

He, however, clarified that they did not have high expectations from the UN as it deployed its forces only where it saw its interest, otherwise it preferred silence and did not show concern. “We apprised the UN working group about the situation of Balochistan,” he added.

Sources said a delegation of the Hazara Qaumi Jirga apprised the UN delegation about the sectarian targeted killing of Hazara community and that the government was not playing its role in curbing such incidents. They urged the UN to pressure the government to ensure security of the people belonging to Hazara community.
