Pakistan calls for UN inquiry of LoC killings

ISLAMABAD :Pakistan on Wednesday denied allegations that its troops killed two Indian soldiers by crossing the Line of Control (LoC) and offered investigations through the United Nations into the recent violations of the ceasefire, besides reiterating its commitment to peace process.

The de-facto border separating Pakistani Kashmir from its Indian-held part was hit by a flare Sunday morning when Indian troops crossed into Pakistani territory, attacked Sawan Patra chekpost in Haji Pir sector of Bagh area and critically injured two soldiers. One of the injured soldiers latter succumbed to his wounds at hospital and Islamabad lodged a protest with New Delhi, which denied the attack and came up with a counter-allegation that Pakistani troops had fired at its village which lead to exchange of heavy fire.On Wednesday, India too summoned Pakistan’s high commissioner to New Delhi to protest against Tuesday’s alleged killings, in which India’s chief military spokesman claimed that one of their soldiers had been beheaded by Pakistani troops who carried away his head.Pakistan rejected these “baseless and unfounded allegations” but echoed calls of caution from India’s foreign minister by saying both sides need to work hard to maintain a recent rapprochement following peace talks which were revived in 2011.“Pakistan strongly rejects the Indian allegation of an attack across the LoC on its military patrol in which two Indian soldiers were claimed to have been killed. These are baseless and unfounded allegations,” Foreign Office said in a statement issued on Wednesday. It said Pakistan remains committed to the ceasefire agreement of 2003, an important Confidence Building Measure that should be respected in letter and spirit. Islamabad was prepared to hold investigations through the United Nations Military Observes Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on the recent ceasefire violations, it added.Pakistan also urged the need for abiding and strengthening existing military mechanisms to ensure that there is no recurrence of such violations in future and reiterated its commitment to a constructive, sustained and result-oriented process of engagement with India.“We have made significant progress in the dialogue process. Pakistan has taken a number of steps to normalise and improve bilateral relations. It is therefore important that both sides make serious efforts in maintaining this improvement and avoid negative propaganda,” the statement concluded.A Pakistani military official said that Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan Army also talked to his Indian counterpart on the hotline on Wednesday and rejected the allegation of cross-LoC firing by Pakistani troops and killing of an Indian soldier.According to the sources, DGMO informed the Indian authorities of Pakistan Army’s ground verification and checking and that they found that nothing had happened as was being alleged by India.
