J&K safer for women than Delhi: Omar Abdullah

AJMER: Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that his state is a safer place for women compared to New Delhi. He was reacting to media queries regarding action taken against those responsible for forcing a girls' band to wind up in his home state.

Omar and his father Farooq Abdullah came to Ajmer to offer prayers at dargah sharif on Thursday. Omar said that action had already been taken against a few and that the girls have been requested to remain fearless and resume the band.

"Kashmir is comparatively safer than country's capital and women are not only free to express their views but also women tourists roam around in the state freely," said Omar. Asked about mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad's alleged fatwa against girls' band "Pragaash", Omar said that mufti had not issued any threat and therefore, had not broken any law. "He simply stated his view that the band is non-Islamic," he added.

Omar said that an example should be set for those who adopt threatening attitude for women in valley and therefore the government is serious about threats to the girl rock band "Pragaash" in the state. "Out of four, who had threatened the girls, three are already arrested and we will see that law will take its course strictly against them," said Omar. He said that a hunt was on to search the fourth accused.

Omar along with his father, Union minister Farooq Abdullah came to Ajmer on Thursday and offered a chadder along with a thankful namaz in the masjid inside the premises of dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
