ICICI Bank ordered to refund Rs 15 lakh to NRI woman with interest and compensation

KAPURTHALA: In a case of wrongly transferring Rs 15 lakh from the account of a NRI woman to ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Kapurthala, has ordered the local branch of ICICI Bank not only to refund the entire amount to the woman with 9 % interest but also pay compensation of Rs 50,000 for harassing her, along with Rs 10,000 as litigation cost.

The decision of the forum has come within four months of filing the complaint by Canada-based Rajdeep Kaur Dhaliwal, who originally hails from Pattar Khurd village of the district. In her complain, she alleged that she was operating a NRI account in the local branch of ICICI Bank since April 25, 2008. In March, 2010 she visited India and approached the bank for converting the amount lying in her account into a fixed deposit. The bank officials obtained a cheque of Rs 15 lakh from her and promised that the receipt of the fixed deposit would be supplied to her through courier and also via email.

Believing the bank officials she left for Canada but never received the receipt of the fixed deposit from the bank. However, when she visited India in early 2013 and procured the statement of her account which was supplied to her on March 5, 2013, she was shocked to see that amount of Rs 15 lakh was shown deducted towards ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Policy, instead of depositing the same in the form of fixed deposit.
