Security forces kill top JeM commander Qari Yasir in shootout

Srinagar: Security forces in Kashmir today killed terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed’s (JeM) top commander, Qari Yasir, in an shootout in the wee hours of morning in north Kashmir’s Lolab area.

Yasir was gunned down by security forces at a village in Kupwara district, police said.

Yasir had been the JeM chief in Kashmir for the last three years, Abdul Ghani Mir, Inspector General of Police, told Firstpost.

“Early in the morning the police post in Garewad village had noticed some suspicious movement after which when they challenged the militant he fired,” Mir said.

He said the operation was launched by the police with the assistance of Army.

An officer with the Indian Army, who did not wanted to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to media, said the militant commander was killed around 6.15 am after a fierce gun battle.

The exchange of fire took place after security forces spotted some persons moving suspiciously and challenged them.

Yasir was among the few surviving militant commanders in valley, and was operating mainly from the dense forest areas in the Lolab region of the frontier Kupwara district.  He was, according to police, charged with the leading the militancy in the region post 2010.
