Nine drown in India river during Hindu festivals: official



NEW DELHI: Nine people have drowned in India's capital during religious festivals that involve immersing statues of Hindu gods in a river, an official said Thursday.Police sources said the figure could be higher as rescue operations were still on.



Eight people were rescued till Wednesday night. There were several cases of drowning at multiple places near the ghat . “ There is no official word on the exact number of people who drowned as there were separate incidents. We have recovered five bodies till now and we expect to find more,” a senior police officer said.

The bodies were identified as that of Rajesh, 25, Toshi, 25, Rahul, 31, Kale, 31, and Yogesh Kumar, 20. They were among a group of 50 people on their way to immerse a Ganesha idol. As per eye- witnesses, the current was too strong and a lot of people lost their balance and got carried away.
