It was a clinical performance from West Indies A featuring a century from Jonathan Carter and some fine bowling which helped them to defeat India A by 55 runs in the second unofficial ODI on Tuesday. In reply to 279, India A were bowled out for 224.
Chasing a score of 280 wasn’t an easy task, but the Indian batting undoubtedly had the firepower to conquer it. The opening partnership which did well against New Zealand A faltered for the second time here with
dismissed in early in the innings. The Karnataka player edged the ball which rolled back on to his stumps.
Within quicktime Mandeep Singh too was back in the den scoring just three. Similar to the West Indian innings, Yuvraj Singh and Chand put on a third-wicket stand of 64 runs to stabilise the chase. Chand hung on to his wicket despite the runs not flowing as freely as he would have expected. The partnership was finally broken by Ashley Nurse in the 20th over when Chand tried to break the shackles and holed it to the long on fielder.
The Indians failed to maintain a partnership and neither did they have any batsman who held fort unlike the West Indians whose innings revolved around Jonathan Carter. While the required run rate was moving northwards, India A was further jolted by twin strikes from Nikita Miller.
Yuvraj Singh was lured into an expansive drive and hit straight to covers. If Yuvraj’s dismissal wasn’t enough, Yusuf Pathan wasted his wicket by edging the next delivery to slips. The dismissal reminded of Pathan’s inconsistency in his international and IPL stint.
The hosts never recovered from thereon despite a brief partnership between Naman Ojha and Kedar Jadhav, but countering the steep run rate was need of the hour. Jadhav was soon dismissed by Miguel Cummins. Ojha (34) followed six overs later bowled by Cummins. It was just a formality from thereon as the wickets kept falling and India A were nowled out for their eventual score.
Left-arm bowler Cummins was the most impressive among all picking four wickets for 31.
It was a complete domination from West Indies A led by Jonathan Carter (133) who scored a sparkling ton to rescue his team from a precarious position. The left-hander began cautiously and navigated through the middle overs before launching an onslaught on the Indian bowlers. He was ably accompanied by Leon Johnson who scored just 39 but helped to build a crucial 131-run partnership.
The third and final ODI will be played on Thursday. It will be important for the Indians to get their act together. While the batsman have the ability to rise to the occasion, it will be a task for the bowlers to regroup.
