The Election Commission on Tuesday asked the Union home ministry to probe suspected violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by the Congress and the BJP for their alleged acceptance of donations from subsidiaries of multi-national firm Vedanta group-Sterlite Industries and the Sesa Goa group.
An EC investigation aided by the IT department has revealed that both the parties have received money to the tune of `5 crores each from Sterlite and Sesa group.
According to an EC official, the donation, prima facie violates Section 29-B of the Representation of the People’s Act that states, “No political party shall be eligible to accept any contribution from any foreign source defined under clause (e) of Section 2 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976.
