High court notice to news channel in Salman Khurshid's trust fraud case

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has issued notice to Aaj Tak news channel to furnish material relating to alleged anomalies committed by union law minister Salman Khurshid's Trust.

The notice was issued by a division bench comprising Justice Umanath Singh and Justice Satish Chandra on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a social activist requesting court to supervise the inquiry being done by the economic offence wing (EOW) of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police into the allegation of misappropriation of funds given by the government to Zakir Hussain Trust run by Khurshid and his wife Louise for distribution of free contraptions to differently abled persons.

Additional solicitor general Vivek Thankha, who flew from Delhi to Lucknow, appeared before the court on behalf of the central government. He argued that the PIL was not maintainable because petitioner has not produce any relevant material in connection with the case. He also said that the purpose of the petition is to get cheap publicity by scandalising the issue.

The court after hearing the two parties issued the notice to Aaj Tak news channel which conducted the sting operation to expose the alleged anomalies done by Khurshid's trust. The next date of hearing will be on October 30.

The PIL, which was filed on October 15, had also sought registration of a case on the basis of the charges levelled against the trust by India Against Corruption (IAC) leader Arvind Kejriwal. Six parties, including the UP government through principal secretary (Home), EOW, the central government through union ministry of social justice, principal secretary (social welfare) UP, TV channel Aaj Tak and Dr Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust have been made respondents in the PIL.

It might be recalled that Kejriwal had also expressed doubt over free and fair inquiry by the UP government into the allegations against Khurshid's trust. He had alleged that Samajwadi Party (SP) government in UP may save Khursid and in return union law minister may bail out SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav from corruption charges probe by the CBI.
