UK's most senior diplomat in India meets Modi, ending 10-year boycott

Ahmedabad: Britain's top diplomat in India  met today with  the chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi,  ending a 10-year boycott over the  state's communal riots in 2002, in which more than 1000 people were killed, including three Britons of Gujarati origin were killed.

The 50-minute meeting comes in the midst of speculation over whether Mr Modi's party, the BJP, will pick him as its prime ministerial candidate for the  next general election, scheduled for 2014. Gujarat will pick its next government in elections in December - Mr Modi is looking for a third successive term as chief minister, though his prime ministerial ambitions are well-known.

After the riots, British officials were banned from dealing directly with  Mr Modi but the government this month changed its policy and said High Commissioner James Bevan would travel to Gujarat.

"The High Commissioner will hold talks in Ahmedabad with senior politicians including Mr. Modi, and will also meet with British firms who have infrastructure projects in the state," a British embassy spokesman told news agencies.

Speaking to NDTV earlier this month, a spokesperson of the UK foreign office had said in London that the decision to engage more closely with Gujarat came "in view of the progress made with (riots) cases pending in the courts."  Former Gujarat minister and close aide of Mr Modi, Maya Kodnani, was recently jailed for 28 years for her role in instigating the riots in the Naroda Patiya locality of Ahmedabad, in which more than 90 people died.

The UK's new attitude is seen as major diplomatic coup for Mr Modi, who has been isolated internationally after the 2002 riots. The US still doesn't grant a visa to him.
