Nine Vietnamese workers die in bus accident in Laos

Nine Vietnamese workers died and six others were injured when their bus crashed into an unfinished bridge and overturned into an abyss in Champasak Province in Laos yesterday.

As Nghe An Province borders Laos, many Vietnamese people often take business trips into the neighbouring country.

According to an eye witness, in the early morning hours of December 19, after completing a construction project in Attapeu Province, 15 workers were taken by bus to another site in Pakse, the capital of Champasak Province.

It was dark by the time they neared the city and the bus crashed into a bridge that was still under construction.

The victims came from Nam Thanh and Van Dien Communes of Nam Dan District in the central province of Nghe An.

All 15 were construction workers from Nghe An Province who had been hired by a local contractor, Tran Ba Anh, to work on a number of construction projects in Laos.

Contractor Tran Ba Anh and his two relatives also died in the accident.

Four of the injured are being treated at hospitals in Laos.

The bodies of the victims are expected to be brought back to Vietnam on December 21.
