Maldives for deeper ties with China


Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim on Tuesday held talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing, on a visit that officials said was aimed at deepening military ties between the two countries.

Mr. Nazim told Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie that the Maldives “is willing to cement relations between the two countries and their militaries”, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

His visit comes amid deepening economic and diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Tourism from China now accounts for close to one-fourth of the nation’s tourism industry, according to officials, with the market growing 40 per cent last year. Last year, China opened its first Embassy in the Maldives.




Shiyam appointed as leader of Maldives Development Alliance

Meedhoo constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam has been appointed as the Interim Leader of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). Shiyam was appointed for the post with 355 members voting in his favour from the 362 members present.

Elections Commission stated that 362 members participated in the ceremony held to inaugurate the party.

Three Interim Deputy Leaders were also appointed in the ceremony. Kudahuvadhoo constitutency MP Ahmed Amir, Sun Travels Aishath Rafeega and Ali Mauroof were appointed for the post.

Nasheed calls on to rise up against the govt

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and its supporters to come out on the streets to change this government. He made this call speaking at the rally held in Ha. Ihavandhoo on Sunday evening.

Nasheed said the people of the Maldives have remained patient for months and that its time for an uprising against the rogue Government.


MDP can never topple the govt- Gasim
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12TH, 2012

Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim has said that MDP can never succeed in toppling the government no matter how hard they try.

Gasim made this remark in an interview given to Vnews last night. Gasim said that the ties between Jumhooree Party and the government are intact.
