Pakistan, US to share workable intelligence Headway made in resolving CSF issue

ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, Pakistan and the United States announced on Tuesday that they would share workable intelligence to eliminate cross-border terrorism, making headway for resolving the Coalition Support Fund issue.

Follow up:

“It was a move forward and there was improvement on the Coalition Support Fund (CSF),” Pakistan’s defence secretary Lt Gen (retd) Asim Yasin Malik said at the conclusion of two-day Pakistan-US Defence Consultative Group (DCG) dialogue.

The head of US defence delegation, Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Dr James Miller announced that the US also wanted to improve its defence relations with Pakistan and the issue of CSF would be taken to Congress.

The US, however, made no announcement to review the drone attacks, the most popular demand of the Pakistani people and the government to review the unilateral US policy of drone attacks. The resumed talks between Islamabad and Washington have reportedly brought about some positive understanding on the issue of CSF, though the US side agreed to share intelligence sharing to end cross-border terrorism.

Pakistan and the US have strains in their defence relations since the unprovoked US attack on Salala post, which killed more than two-dozen Pakistani soldiers. The atmosphere, said a high-level source, was good for talks following reopening of the Nato-led coalition’s groundsupply lines and the resumption of bilateral consultations on regional security over six months.

As the DCG is the primary forum for exchanging views and coordinating defence policy with the goal of strengthening cooperation to support each country’s security interests, both sides expressed their deep appreciation for the sacrifices of all military personnel and civilians in the common fight.
