J&K has been the victim of cross-border terrorism, says Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday backed the Centre on the withdrawal of United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) from the states saying it has failed to uphold the sanctity of the Line of Control (LoC).

"This group was placed here to maintain the sanctity of the LoC. Unfortunately, for over past two and a half decades, the UNMOGIP has done nothing to maintain it," Omar said, speaking on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar.

In 1949, the UNMOGIP was set up to supervise the ceasefire at the LoC.

"Unfortunately, the state of J&K has been the victim of cross-border and cross LoC terrorism and I don't see any structures being passed by the UN to take note of these violations," the Chief Minister said.

"Kargil war took place as a violation of the LoC by Pakistan. The UN has failed to uphold the sanctity of the LoC," he added.
