Writer Salman Rushdie's visit to Kolkata cancelled

Author Salman Rushdie's visit to Kolkata has been cancelled at the last minute, allegedly because of pressure from the state government and police.

Mr Rushdie has been touring India with director Deepa Mehta who has turned his famous book Midnight's Children into a movie.  The movie is scheduled to release on February 1.  Mr Rushdie has visited Mumbai and Delhi already.  In Kolkata, he was to address a press conference at a five-star hotel along with Ms Mehta, organized by the film's distributors.

A report in the Telegraph says that " The intelligence branch and the city police told PVR, the Indian distributors of Midnight's Children, that if Rushdie came to Calcutta, he would be sent back on the next flight, according to the sources."A group of about 200 muslims protested  his scheduled arrival at the Kolkata airport this morning.
