India, Iran, Kabul to meet ahead of NAM summit

Ahead of the NAM summit, India, Iran and Afghanistan will hold a trilateral meeting today in Tehran even as prime minister Manmohan Singh would leave for Iran on August 28 to attend the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit.
The meeting is expected to be dominated by the issue of development of the Iranian port of Chabahar that has been under consideration for some time now. The port will provide an alternative gateway to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
The meeting, which will be at the deputy foreign minister or foreign secretary level, follows Iran’s recent consent to India for investing in Chabahar port.
At a briefing on the NAM summit, foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai on Saturday said, “We are hoping to schedule a trilateral meeting. This is what Iran has suggested.” He said, the external affairs ministry is currently studying a report submitted by the Indian Ports Association that has made suggestions on development of infrastructure at Chabahar port. “It has a number of different possibilities that we are studying.”
Iran has already built a road connecting Chabahar to the Afghan border. From there India has, despite persistent attacks by Taliban, successfully built a 135-mile-long road to Kandahar-Herat highway in Afghanistan.
