Similar decision against PM Ashraf if letter not written: Aitzaz Ahsan

ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan on Monday said that if the government did not write the letter to Swiss authorities to reopen cases against President Asif Ali Zardari, the court would reach a decision similar to the one that came against former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives at the parliament, Ahsan said that if Prime Minister Ashraf was disqualified, a new prime minister would be elected and the process would continue until the completion of the government’s term.

Ahsan moreover said that he appreciated the court’s granting of 22 days to Prime Minister Ashraf.

He said the court had not shown such magnanimity in the past, adding that, he respected that the bench had realised that the ruling against Gilani came in haste.

Ahsan moreover said that the court had not left open the possibility of reaching a middle ground.

He reiterated that “never in history had a court made its head of state accountable before a court of another country”.
