PERTH - Pakistan defeated India 5-2 in the play-off for the third-fourth place in the nine-a-side hockey International Super Series to win the bronze medal at the Perth Hockey Stadium in Australia on Sunday.
Rashid Mehmood scored twice to help Pakistan register their first win of the series after losing all three of their first round matches. The Greenshirts lost the opening match to Australia 4-2, were crushed by England in the second match by the same scoreline and were beaten by arch-rivals India 5-2 in the third match on Saturday. Australia defeated England 5-2 in the final of the International Super Series Hockey 9’s. It was five-time world player of the year Jamie Dwyer who got things going for the Kookaburras scoring the opening goal. Joining Dwyer on the score sheet in the first ten minutes of the game was Eddie Ockenden and Matt Ghodes who helped setup what was a brilliant first half of hockey from the Australian’s. The second half was evenly matched with England finding the back of the net twice through Ally Brogdon and Harry Martin to make things interesting.
