Ready to talk to Maldives govt within agreement framework: GMR

With its $500-million airport development project here becoming a target of political football, Indian infrastructure major GMR has said it is flexible about discussing with the Maldives government all the issues within the framework of the concession agreement.

The project, inked between GMR and former President Mohammed Nasheed’s government to develop Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, is facing protests from political groups here who term this agreement as “illegal” alleging that it was signed despite objections from the Parliament.

Recent arrest of senior politicians politically motivated- MDP

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned the arrests of Senior Politician Ibrahim Zaki, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor MP, International Spokesman of MDP, Abdulla Jabir MP and others on Friday alleging that the arrests are politically motivated.

MDP Presidential Candidate, former President Nasheed said that Zaki has been very vocal recently and had publicly criticised the present Government’s handling of Indo – Maldives relations and the February 7th coup, when the elected Government was violently overthrown.

No anti-India demonstrations in Maldives- Shameem
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2012

State Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ahmed Shameem has said that there are no anti-India demonstrations held in Maldives and therefore India should not be worried over a non existent matter.

Shameem said that he believes that the recent statement of the Official Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, regarding the current situation in Maldives was based on false information that the Indian government received.
