Bangladesh garment factories reopen after riots

Dhaka: More than 300 garment factories in Bangladesh reopened on Thursday after the government promised cheap food for nearly half a million workers to halt a wave of violent protests against low wages.

Owners shut the plants in Ashulia, an industrial zone outside the capital Dhaka, on Saturday after a week of demonstrations by employees demanding a 50 per cent salary hike.

At least 100 people were injured in clashes with the police and dozens of big plants, which make clothes for global retailers such as Wal-Mart, H&M and Gap, were damaged.

'All the factories have opened this morning and staff have joined their work,' local police chief Badrul Alam told AFP.
