Nepal diary | Acting Prime Minister Gachchhadar says govt will hold CA election on time


Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, who has been given the responsibility of Acting Prime Minister in the absence of Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, has assured that the Bhattarai-led government will hold fresh elections of the Constituent Assembly (CA) within the slated timeframe and no one should doubt this.

He also lambasted the claims made by opposition parties that a caretaker government cannot hold elections, adding that elections were carried out by caretaker governments on many occassions in the past.

Talking to reporters at Chandragadhi Airport of Bhadrapur Tuesday, he also said the Prime Minister will only step down after successfully holding the CA elections in about six months time and called the demand of opposition parties for his resignation “unjustified”.

UML cadres' meet endorses stance against ethnic federalism

The two-day national gathering of senior UML cadres has endorsed the party's position against ethnicity-based federalism.

The national gathering, which concluded in the capital Tuesday, passed the political document presented by party chairman Jhala Nath Khanal in which he opposed the ethnicity-based federal model, proposing mixed model based on multiple identities.

During the closed door discussion, most of the cadres of suggested the party to go for up to seven states to be carved up on the basis of different identities.

NC decides to intensify joint protest against govt

The main opposition party Nepali Congress has decided to intensify anti-government protest which was jointly announced by 24 political parties earlier this month.

NC Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at party headquarters in Sanepa on Tuesday decided to make joint protest against government's autocratic move, more effective, according to the chief secretary of the party office Basanta Kumar Gautam.

Baidya lambastes Dahal, Bhattarai as he announces new party; says his party may not register with EC

Chairman of the newly formed CPN, Maoist Mohan Baidya today came down heavily on the UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, accusing them of ruining the achievements of the 'people's war' and compromising the party's basic principles.

Speaking at a press conference organised in the capital to officially announce the new party on Tuesday, Baidya said his faction decided to part ways after the UCPN (Maoist) establishment chose "reformist and rightist path" and that their activities were guided by opportunism. The hardliner leader also accused Dahal and Bhattarai of trying to compromise national independence.
