HYDERABAD: Defence Minister Naveed Qamar said on Sunday that negotiations were underway between Pakistan and India for the withdrawal of troops from Siachen and soon a better strategy would be formulated in this direction.

Talking to reporters in Tando Muhammad Khan, he said Siachen had the unique status of being the world’s highest border having no population in the area.

“Secretary-level deliberations were held few days ago and hopefully the two countries will succeed in formulating a comprehensive strategy for the withdrawal of troops from the area,” he said.

About the Arsalan Iftikhar case, Qamar said that following directives of the Supreme Court the government had formed a legal committee, which after completing due procedure, would submit its report.

“Opposition parties are trying to politicise the issue to gain sympathies of people for the next general elections,” the minister said and added that people were aware of such tactics of opponents of the government.

The minister said the Zulfikarabad project was in interest of the people of Sindh “because with the establishment of a new city, people of the area will not only enjoy maximum facilities but doors of progress and prosperity will also open for them”.

“The increasing population demands the establishment of more cities in order to provide better civic facilities to the residents,” he said, adding that the Zulfikarabad project would surely bring “a revolution of economic development” in the province.

Qamar was critical of the role of nationalist organisations on the issue and said that they were only misguiding people of Sindh.

About the performance of PIA, the minister said that the government had appointed new chairman of PIA and hopefully new policies would help improve performance of the national carrier.

Responding to a question, the minister said that there was no contribution for PIA in the federal budget as the airliner had its own policy of generating revenue.

About the restoration of NATO supplies, Qamar said that all decisions in this respect would be made by the government “keeping in view the national interests and the betterment of the country”.

He said that the government would arrange local government elections according to law.

The minister earlier inaugurated schemes of electric supply in villages of Razi Khan Chandio Chakkar Jamali. He also inaugurated link road schemes in Qasim Sand and Haji Ahmed Sand.

The minister also visited the residence of Yousuf Bhatti and offered condolences on the death of his relative. He also visited the residences of senior journalist Ghulam Nabi Kerio and offered condolences on the death of his brother.
