SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah who had gone to London last week to visit his family, flew back to Srinagar on Tuesday in the wake of tense situation that followed the fire at Sufi shrine Dastgeer Sahib, Khanyar in the old city yesterday.The fire occurred due to electric short circuiting on Monday morning.
The state authorities on Tuesday imposed undeclared curfew in the areas of downtown Srinagar -Nowhata, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal, Maharajgunj and Kralkhud. However, police said that they have imposed only restrictions on the movement of the people to avert any untoward incident in the areas.
Normal life was paralyzed in other parts of the valley due to the general strike called by various heads of several Muslim sects and separatist leaders. The strike was called to show a mark of respect towards the shrine that was razed down in the fire.
Shops, business establishments, banks and schools were closed while traffic is off the roads.
